Cajamarca
At 2,750 mts. (9,020 ft. above sea level) is the city of Cajamarca, may be one of the cities with the most Spanish influence because after the defeat and execution of Atahualpa in 1532, Cajamarca became the first stronghold of the Conquistadors and from there expeditions were organized to consolidate the Spanish hold on Peru.
Among its main attractions are Atahualpa's Ransom Room, the Open Windows of Otuzco, the Cathedral, the Cumbemayo Aqueducts, the Stone Forest of the Friars and the Inca's Thermal Baths.
Undoubtedly one of the most important festivals in Peru is the Carnival in Cajamarca, which falls in February, just before Lent, and is celebrated with one procession after another, dances and music, etc.
Also in Cajamarca is the La Colpa Hacienda where, at milking time, all the cows are called individually by name and each comes and enters the stall bearing her name, offering a very interesting spectacle.
